His previous positions at Lyric have included Music Administrator, Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor. In recent years Mr. Morehead was cover conductor at Lyric Opera for <em>Die Meistersinger<\/em>, <em>Jen\u016ffa<\/em>, <em>Der fliegende Holl\u00e4nder<\/em>, <em>Sweeney Todd<\/em>, <em>Billy Budd<\/em> and many others. He conducted regular season performances of <em>Die Fledermaus<\/em>, <em>Un ballo in maschera<\/em> and <em>The Mikado <\/em>and the premiere production of Anthony Davis&#8217;s <em>Amistad<\/em> and student performances of <em>La Traviata<\/em>, <em>The Cunning Little Vixen<\/em>,&nbsp; <em>Carmen, Die Zauberfl\u00f6te<\/em> and <em>Pagliacci<\/em>. During the 2010-11 season Mr. Morehead conducted performances of <em>Un ballo in maschera<\/em> (with Sondra Radvanovsky, Frank Lopardo, Stephanie Blythe and Mark Delavan), <em>The Mikado <\/em>(with James Morris, Stephanie Blythe, Neal Davies, Andriana Chuchman, and Andrew Shore), and <em>Carmen<\/em> (with Katharine Goeldner and Richard Cox). In January&nbsp;2015 he conducted&nbsp;the first edition of Lyric Unlimited&#8217;s <em>The Magic Victrola<\/em>, a program introducing young children to opera with excerpts sung by members of the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago. In addition to repertoire coaching and work in preparation of Lyric Opera and Ryan Opera Center productions, he conducted performances of Rossini&#8217;s <em>La Cenerentola<\/em> for the Center.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Morehead is also a free lance conductor, coach, pianist, and harpsichordist. For the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whisperingrivermusic.com\">Whispering River Orchestra<\/a>, he has conducted on several occasions, including&nbsp;<em>Landscape<\/em> for tenor, flute and strings by his wife Patricia. In December 2023 he will conduct <em>Messiah<\/em> for them. In the summer of 2008 Mr. Morehead conducted <em>Il barbiere di Siviglia<\/em> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lyriqueenmer\/\">Lyrique-en-Mer Festival<\/a> on Belle-Ile, France, and returned to the Festival the summer of 2011 to conduct <em>L&#8217;elisir d&#8217;amore<\/em>. He conducted Boulez&#8217; <em>Improvisations sur Malarm\u00e9<\/em> for the Contemporary Chamber Players at The University of Chicago and Gounod&#8217;s <em>Faust<\/em> at Illinois State University. Mr. Morehead has given vocal masterclasses in conjunction with the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Elgin Opera, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Longy School of Bard College, and has been a member of the faculty of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belcantoinst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bel Canto Institute<\/a> in Florence, Italy. At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highlandsoperastudio.com\">Highlands Opera Studio<\/a> in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada, he has conducted performances of Gounod&#8217;s <em>Faust, <\/em>Mozart&#8217;s <em>Cos\u00ec fan tutte, <\/em>Puccini&#8217;s <em>La boh\u00e8me<\/em> and Strauss&#8217; <em>Ariadne auf Naxos<\/em>. He participated in a two-day intensive session run by MYOpera in Toronto for six young opera singers, presenting an aria master class and assisting with preparation of duets and trios for performance. In April of 2018 he conducted Puccini&#8217;s <em>Tosca<\/em> for Soir\u00e9e lyrique (now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/soireelyrique\/?hc_ref=ARQYxjU7lyKmbgQP2Kh3wvoL1Yq4GkGOOEl01odWag3lCLOK0eOQsOuFZh7vWOV1Qio&amp;__tn__=kC-R\">Fox Valley Lyrical Productions<\/a>) in Elgin, IL. He is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/muskokaconcertband\/\">Muskoka Concert Band<\/a>, in which he plays bassoon. Mr. Morehead has been a board member of the Conductors&#8217; Guild and the awards panel of the Solti Foundation U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Morehead was a founding member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patphil.com\/cubework.html\">CUBE<\/a>, a Chicago-based chamber ensemble specializing in the performance of new music. From 1987 to 2013 with the CUBE ensemble he performed as pianist in a wide variety of repertoire and conducted the ensemble in world premieres of William Ferris <em>An Eden Garden<\/em>, Sebastian Huydts <em>Three Serious Songs<\/em>, Russ Grazier <em>Leaving, Arriving<\/em>, Ilya Levinson&nbsp;<em>The Tell-Tale Heart,<\/em> and other works.<\/p>\n<p>From 1981 to 1985 Mr. Morehead worked regularly with Tulsa Opera in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In Spring of 1983 he conducted student performances of Puccini&#8217;s <em>Madame Butterfly<\/em>, and in 1984 he conducted the Tulsa Opera Spring production of Gilbert &amp; Sullivan&#8217;s <em>Pirates of Penzance<\/em>, directed by David Gately and starring Karen Hunt and James Billings.<\/p>\n<p>Before coming to Lyric Opera in 1981, Mr. Morehead, a native of New York City, was Coordinator of the Orchestral Training Program at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His previous positions in Canada included the conductorship of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patphil.com\/bachelgar.html\">Bach-Elgar Choral Society<\/a> in Hamilton, Ontario, where he&nbsp;conducted, among other works, the <em>Sea Symphony<\/em> of Ralph Vaughan Williams. In 1984 and 1985 he conducted for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patphil.com\/ccmw.html\">Canadian Contemporary Music Workshop<\/a> concerts including the Canadian premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann&#8217;s <em>Concerto for Oboe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to 1978, Mr. Morehead lived in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was Musical Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patphil.com\/necog.html\">New England Chamber Opera Group<\/a> (NECOG), which eventually merged with two other groups to form the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blo.org\">Boston Lyric Opera<\/a>.&nbsp; For NECOG he conducted American premieres of Busoni&#8217;s <em>Arlecchino<\/em> and Handel&#8217;s <em>Imeneo<\/em>, the world premiere of Paul Earls&#8217; <em>The Death of King Phillip<\/em>, and works including Stravinsky&#8217;s <em>Mavra<\/em>, Mozart&#8217;s <em>Za\u00efde<\/em> and Menotti&#8217;s <em>The Medium<\/em>, as well as other repertory. He was also Musical Director of the Newton Chamber Orchestra and the Brookline Symphony Orchestra. He was assistant conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, rehearsal pianist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and for seven years a member of the faculty of the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. He has performed widely as pianist and harpsichordist, and played continuo with the Boston Symphony under Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Bernstein, and Peter Maag.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Morehead was educated at Trinity School (New York), The Baylor School (Chattanooga), Swarthmore College, Harvard University, and the New England Conservatory of Music. He studied for two years in Paris and Fontainebleau with Nadia Boulanger. He lives near Dwight, Ontario with his wife, oboist\/composer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriciamorehead.com\">Patricia Morehead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his musical activities, Mr. Morehead is the editor of revised versions of the <em>New American Roget&#8217;s College Thesaurus<\/em>, <em>The New American Webster&#8217;s Handy College Dictionary<\/em> and <em>Hoyle&#8217;s Rules of Games<\/em>.
